130 Jahre nach ihrer gewaltsamen Verschleppung fordern die Benin-Bronzen ihr Schicksal zurück: Tausende von ihnen befinden sich noch immer in europäischen Museen – 259 davon im GRASSI-Museum für Völkerkunde zu Leipzig. Eine von ihnen ist Ausgangspunkt des Dokumentarfilms ‚Von allen Geistern‘.
Der Film folgt den verborgenen Energien dreier unterschiedlicher Objekte.
Er begleitet ihre Wege durch das Museum, lauscht ihren eingeschriebenen Erinnerungen und tritt in einen poetischen Dialog mit ihrer Vergangenheit. Welche Spuren von Gewalt, Verlust und Widerstand tragen sie in sich?

Während das Museum seine Praxis des Sammelns, Forschens und Ausstellens radikal hinterfragt, stehen auch diese drei Objekte an einem Wendepunkt. Mehr als ein Jahrhundert lagerten sie im Depot des Leipziger Völkerkundemuseums – unter den Beständen auch menschliche Überreste: Körper, die zu Inventarnummern wurden.

Von allen Geistern ist eine poetische und dokumentarische Annäherung an Restitution, Erinnerung und Verantwortung – und an das Sammeln in einer vergänglichen Welt.

130 years after being violently plundered, the Benin Bronzes are reclaiming their destiny: thousands of them are still held in European museums — 259 of which are located at the GRASSI Museum of Ethnology in Leipzig. One of them serves as the starting point for the documentary Matter and Spirits.
The film follows the hidden energy of three distinct objects. It accompanies their journey through the museum, listens to their inscribed memories, and enters into a poetic dialogue with their past. What traces of violence, loss, and resistance do they carry within them?
As the museum radically questions its practices of collecting, researching, and exhibiting, these three objects also find themselves at a turning point. For more than a century, they were stored in the archives of the Leipzig Ethnological Museum — among the holdings are also human remains: bodies that were turned into inventory numbers. Matter and Spirits is a poetic and documentary approach to restitution, remembrance, and responsibility — and to the act of collecting in a transient world.
